Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Ch’nook is unfortunately unable to offer a Scholars 2020/2021 experience comparable to those in previous years. Many of the aspects of the Scholars program that we know and love (i.e., gathering in large numbers) are now sadly off-limits to us. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do our best given the circumstances, and that’s what we’re doing!
First thing’s first: Ch’nook is increasing the scholarship amount allocated to each Scholar from $2,000 to $3,500. This is in acknowledgement of the financial strain COVID-19 has placed on many students and we hope that this increase can make a small difference. It is a small compensation for not being allowed to gather together, but we hope that it can be meaningful. The scholarship will dispersed twice – $1,750 in the fall and another $1,750 in the spring.
In lieu of the Fall and Spring Gatherings, we will be hosting monthly virtual events from November to March (dates & times subject to change):
Saturday 7 November, 1-3pm
Wednesday 2 December, 6-8pm
Monday 11 January, 6-8pm
Wednesday 10 February, 6-8pm
Saturday 13 March, 1-3pm
To receive both scholarship payments, Scholars must attend 4 of the 5 virtual events. Events will cover a range of topics including leadership, networking, and career planning.?If you’d like to apply but will have challenges making these days/times, please reach out and let us know in advance of submitting your application.
Ch’nook is glad to offer personalized business cards to the 2020/2021 Scholars, however we are unable to offer professional headshots.
The firm deadline for all materials to reach Ch’nook is 11:59pm Sunday 18 October 2020.
The Ch’nook Selection Committee reviews all on-time and complete applications and determines the cohort of Ch’nook Scholars
Successful applicants are contacted within two weeks of the application deadline. Successful applicants will be provided with an acceptance letter that outlines the program objectives and requirements.
Ch’nook Scholars are asked to confirm their acceptance in writing, to send letters of thanks to Ch’nook funders, and to sign and return the Achieve and Contribute Agreement in a timely manner.
Ch’nook will announce the names, post-secondary institutions, and community affiliations of the 2020/2021 Ch’nook Scholars to schools, funders, and media outlets.
Scholarship cheques will be distributed in two separate installments of $1,750 after the first and last virtual events. Upon completion of all program requirements, Ch’nook will issue payments to students; however, please allow at least eight weeks for processing and delivery.
Registrations for the 2020/2021 Ch’nook Scholars Program is now closed.
